Everything you need to know about visiting Latvia's parks
Yes! All five parks featured on our site are completely free and open to the public. Latvia's public parks are maintained by local municipalities and are accessible to everyone year-round, 24 hours a day.
Each season offers a unique experience. Summer (June–August) offers the longest days and warmest weather. Autumn (September–October) brings stunning foliage colors. Spring (April–May) features blooming flowers and birdsong. Winter offers serene snow-covered landscapes. We recommend late May through September for first-time visitors.
Most of our featured parks are easily accessible by Riga's public transportation system (trams, buses, and trolleybuses). Mežaparks has its own tram stop. Bastejkalna, Kronvalda, and Vērmanes Garden are all within walking distance of Riga's Old Town. Dzintari Forest Park in Jūrmala is reachable by a scenic 30-minute train ride from Riga Central Station.
Latvia is generally a very safe country for travelers. The parks featured on our site are well-maintained, popular with locals, and considered safe during daylight hours. As with any destination, we recommend standard precautions during evening hours and keeping valuables secure.
Dogs are welcome in most Latvian parks, though they must be kept on a leash in designated areas. Some parks have off-leash zones. Always clean up after your pet — waste bag dispensers are available in most parks.
Facilities vary by park. Mežaparks and Dzintari Forest Park have the most comprehensive facilities including restrooms, cafés, and playgrounds. The central Riga parks (Bastejkalna, Kronvalda, Vērmanes Garden) are surrounded by restaurants and cafés. We recommend checking our individual park pages for specific facility information.
While Latvian is the official language, English is widely spoken in Riga, especially by younger generations and in tourist areas. Park signage often includes English translations. A few basic Latvian phrases (like "paldies" — thank you) are always appreciated by locals.
Nuviaplayshuffle.skin is a passion project dedicated to promoting Latvia's natural heritage. We may partner with local tourism boards and eco-friendly businesses in the future, but our content is always independent and honest. Our park recommendations are based solely on merit.
